The Story Behind the Orlando Shooting Victims

Early morning on Sunday, July 12th, 2016, a lone gunman claimed the lives of 49 people who were out to have a good time at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida. This mass shooting is the deadliest in US history. The victims range in ages from 18 to 50, both men and women. Among the victims were a recent high school graduate, a ride operator for Harry Potter at Universal Studios, dancers, singers, and many who will be missed.

Several heroes emerged from the victims as well. Mother of 11 and grandmother of 6, Brenda Lee Marquez McCool was at Pulse that evening with her 21-year-old son Isaiah Henderson for salsa night. When the gunman pointed his gun in their direction, her motherly instincts took over and she shielded her son. She took two bullets and died from her injuries while saving her son’s life.

One victim, Eddie Jamoldroy Justice, managed to get a text out to his mother asking her to call the police for help while he was hiding in the bathroom with others. He did his best to get help for himself and those trapped with him with the limited time and resources they had available. Unfortunately they were not able to be rescued before the gunman found them.

Edward Sotomayor Jr. was one of the first victims identified in the shooting at the club. It was reported that Sotomayor died while trying to protect his boyfriend from the gunfire.
